Capuchin Saints & Blesseds

Capuchins of Mid-America honor Saint Conrad of Parzham, as our heavenly patron. Conrad is just one of 57 Capuchin friars and nuns, from the 16th to the 20th century, who have been honored by the Church as Saints and Blesseds. This prompted Pope John Paul II to say, "They say you Capuchins are poor, but you are actually very, very rich. You have Saints!"

His Holiness said this at the beginning of his pontificate. Subsequently, he has been personally involved in further emphasizing this enrichment. He has canonized five of our fourteen saints, and beatified 33 of the 43 blesseds. Of the 57 saints and blessed, one died in the 16th century, 12 each in the 17th and 18th centuries, 4 in the 19th, and 28 in the 20th.

The most recent canonizations (both in 2002) are those of St. Ignatius of Santhia (d. 1770) and "Padre Pio" or St. Pius of Pietrelcino (d. 1968), and the most recent beatifications (both in 2003) are those of Bl. Mark of Aviano (d. 1699) amd Bl. Andrew Hyacinth Longhin (d. 1936).
